History of the BCBUA

This is the very beginning of some historical information as compiled from several email conversations with Richard Christie adn Chuck Blackie, two of the orginal founding fathers of our association. Some of this information is not as accurate as we want, so if you have more informtaion for us, please foward it to info@bcbua.ca. Any pictures from that early era would also be great.

From Richard Christie:

The association was started in November 1974. There were 9 people present at a meeting held at the Newton Inn. They were Howard Chapman, Richard Christie, Chuck Blaikie, Bill Murphy, Doug Hudlin, Ed Jantzen, George Connelly, Jamie Mould, and one other (I can't recall at this time) .

Our original president was Doug Hudlin 74-80. Then Richard Christie took over from 80-86. Then Howard for a year, Len Enns for a year, and then Jerry Tregaskis for 2 years. In 1990 Bill Murphy took over. I believe he was president for about 7 years. Then Scottie Scott took over for 4 years? After him came Chuck for 2, and now John Berry. I may have the total years served incorrect, but I believe that all the names are there.

Our original set up in 1975 was $7.50 for membership, and $5.00 for a clinic. We used to average about 200 total (people attending) clinics every year, and our membership was about 500-600. In 1980, when I took over as president, I arranged with the BCABA President to combine the clinic and membership fees into one, with the total cost being $10. Our membership then jumped to about 700.
